Fort McPherson
POPULATION: 792

Fort McPherson is located on the east bank of the Peel River near the Dempster Highway ferry crossing. For many years a centre of business and trade in the Mackenzie Delta, Fort McPherson today has a stable population, but few employment opportunities. The Fort McPherson Tent and Canvas factory is a notable exception, supplying traditional wall tents and teepees to customers around the world.

This Gwich’in community is 121 km south of Inuvik. The Dempster Highway closes for a few weeks each spring and fall for breakup and freeze-up on the Peel and Mackenzie Rivers, however Aklak Air provides passenger air service year round. Chief Julius School offers K-12, there is a Gwich’in language centre here, and an Aurora College Community Learning Centre. Accommodation and groceries are available, and the community has a health centre and RCMP detachment.
