Paulatuk (Paulatuuq – “place of coal”) was named for seams of lignite coal that are exposed nearby. Paulatuk is located on Darnley Bay near the mouth of the Hornaday River and is the headquarters for Tuktut Nogait National Park. Many residents make their living from the land, hunting and fishing year round. Commercial sport hunts are offered, and community services provide some employment. Paulatuk, part of the Inuvialuit settlement area, is 402 km east of Inuvik and accessed from Inuvik via Aklak Air. Summer barge resupply brings food and supplies from the south via the Mackenzie River.

Angik School offers K-11 education and there is an Aurora College Community Learning Centre.  Groceries and accommodation are available. There’s a health centre and an RCMP detachment in the community.
