Whatì ("Marten Lake") is a traditional Tlicho community on the shores of Lac La Martre, the third largest lake in the Northwest Territories. Lac La Martre is renowned for its trout fishing, and extensive marshlands in this area are a haven for birds where North American flyways converge. The community economy is largely based on traditional subsistence activities, but rotational work in mining is also available.

There is daily scheduled air service from Yellowknife and Tlicho communities via Air Tindi.  In winter, a 145 km winter road connects to Highway 3 near Behchokö.

Mezi Community School offers K-12 education.  Accommodation and groceries are available and there is a health centre and an RCMP detachment.

For more information, visit the community page, or the GNWT’s Bureau of Statistics page.
