Living in the Northwest Territories has its own special perks and pleasures.
While the cost of living is higher than in southern cities, costs are offset by savings in many other areas.
Salaries are generally higher, and a smaller portion of your income is taxable. No premiums are payable for health care. Education is supported, and university and trades training support is substantial.
A large percentage of northern residents walk or bike to work, saving hours each day, as well as transportation costs. Costs of food and household necessities are comparable or higher than large cities in southern Canada, but there’s no provincial sales tax so your hard earned dollars can purchase up to ten percent more. A longer winter translates to higher heating costs, but other utility costs are similar to southern Canada.
